Everybody on Facebook seems to be running their business from their beachside bar nowadays. How do they do it? Remote access tools and cloud based services make this possible. We can work as if we are in front of our workplace computer using a screen sharing program like Teamviewer. We can keep on top of all our contact calls and emails with a good customer logging system like Hubspot CRM. Face to face contact is made with a video chat service like Skype. Virtual Private Network – we have access to our computer network from anywhere. A VPN extends a private network across a public network, and enables users to send and receive data as if their computers were directly connected to the private network. A similar method is to use shared local storage – we can access our locally stored files. We use a program to access our NAS, our network accessed storage drive Pros – Should feel the fastest of the different options Cons – More complex to set up. Work computer has to be on all the time.

Cloud

Cloud Document Storage – we hold our documents on a remote server “in the cloud” Pros – files are available from anywhere Cons – Anybody who makes a mistake affects everybody.

Screen Sharing

Screen sharing – we can use our work computer as if we were sitting in front of it. Pros – No extra software licenses are needed eg Microsoft Office Cons – Can feel slow if there is a poor internet connection. Work computer has to be on all the time.
